City Schools sold computers with employees personal information

June 02, 2010

The Roanoke City School system sold computers with employees personal information still on them.

The school system said they received a tip that they might have a problem. The Superintendent wouldn't provide any details but we know it wasn't from a school employee. What we can say for sure is this will be a costly mistake not only for Roanoke City Schools but possibly thousands of employees. Administrators held a press conference to tell the public eight computers it sold, similar the one you see here, did NOT have their hard drives removed.

Roanoke City Schools holds an auction every year to sell old equipment like computers. Nowadays, the auctions are done online and it's standard procedure to remove the hard drives before they're sold.

"It was certified to the board before they acted that the hard drives had indeed been removed," said Rita Bishop.
We're told the hard drives contained personal information of two thousand employees as of November 2006.
It had names, social security numbers, and in some cases home addresses. We know the buyer purchased between 25 to 30 computers for 500 bucks.
